Bringing Language Awareness to Life in the Classroom
A Dynamic and Cross-Curricular Approach
Language Awareness is not an isolated subject. It connects all disciplines : mathematics, arts, science, geography, history, citizenship and more. Every area of learning becomes an opportunity to explore other languages. This approach relies on children’s natural curiosity and joy of learning, while celebrating the diversity that surrounds them.
Daring to Begin with Confidence
Implementing this approach may seem ambitious, especially with younger children. Many teachers mention a lack of training or suitable resources. Yet, success lies in adopting an open and collaborative mindset: the teacher becomes a fellow explorer of languages and cultures alongside their pupils. This dynamic is made possible thanks to structured, reliable resources that encourage everyone to experiment confidently and with pleasure.
Simple and Transferable Activities
Here are some examples of classroom activities where Language Awareness takes center stage:
- 🗺️ Cultural projects: discovering a country through its wonders, animals, music, and language.
- 🎨 Artistic paths: inviting artists or authors to share their work and their language.
- 📖 Reading workshops: welcoming native speakers to share a story in their language.
- 🤗 Multilingual encounters: inviting parents or pupils to introduce their home language.
- 🥘 Cooking workshops: discovering a country through traditional dishes, with parents participating.
- 🎵 Songs and rhymes: exploring new sounds, melodies, and dances.
- ✍️ Calligraphy workshops: discovering different writing systems.
- 🎲 Language games: memory games, riddles, card games, guided coloring, or flashcards, …
- 🎭 Multilingual Kamishibaï: creating a multilingual story as part of the international Kamilala.org contest (an Erasmus+ project and now a reference in the field).
These accessible and joyful activities allow every teacher (even without linguistic training) to open their classroom to the world.
Opening Up to the World
Starting from the children’s experiences, from the reality of the classroom, the school, and its environment, Language Awareness builds connections, gives meaning, and sparks discovery. It offers each child the desire to explore the world, in a concrete, joyful, and inclusive way.
Languages are no longer a barrier but a driving force for tomorrow’s citizens, a source of joy within schools that brings linguistic and cultural diversity to life.
